Joint Ph.D. Program

Recruitment of Joint Ph.D. Students

The joint Ph.D. program is one of the initiatives of “Laboratory for Synthetic Chemistry and Chemical Biology, LSCCB” to attract particularly Hong Kong students to further their studies in Synthetic Chemistry, Cancer Biology and Diagnostics/Theranostics. It is a joint program collaborated by LSCCB, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Imperial College of London (ICL) in the United Kingdom.

Eligibility and Academic Entry Criteria

LSCCB is now inviting talented and motivated graduates of all nationalities to apply for the joint Ph.D. program. Applicants should possess

  • Outstanding academic records, excellent research ability and potential;

  • A first/upper second-class honours degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine or equivalent from the top 100 of QS World University Rankings 2022 OR a M.Sc./M.Phil. in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine or related disciplines;

  • Research experience as part of university degree course is advantageous;

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

What We Offer

LSCCB will offer successful applicants

  • A Ph.D. opportunity in HKU and ICL while registered as HKU PhD candidate.

  • A tax-free studentship supported by LSCCB lasts up to 4 years;

  • 11-month research experience in ICL with research mentorship from internationally renowned scholars;

  • Travelling allowance (once) to and from ICL for knowledge exchanges.

  • Conference travelling allowance provided by HKU: ~HK$13,500;

  • Opportunities to work with industry and other universities for innovative research projects.

 

Research Topics

Research topics are highlighted as below. Applicants are suggested to opt for those they have strong interests and preferably they have experiences.

  • Synthetic chemistry of anticancer drug, iron-catalysis, metal carbene catalysis, medicinal chemistry, and computational chemistry.

  • Cancer biology, cancer pharmacology, cancer immunotherapy, molecular medicine, drug delivery, metal-based and natural products-based therapeutics.

  • Imaging probes, diagnostic probes, theranostics, and photopharmacology.

  • Bioinformatics such as proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, omics and etc.
